Bee Team: Sanctuary Hive Inspections (15 Aug 2026)

The Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary will be open for Bee Team members to come and help inspect bee hives. Registration for this event is by invitation only. Please bring your protective gear, hive tools, smokers, and drinking water.

Beekeeping 101 - Zaferia Junction Community Garden (16 Aug 2026)

Beekeeping 101 is an introductory class that will give beginners a glimpse into the secret lives of honeybees. The class includes instruction, discussions, and suiting up to inspect the hives in the bee yard, weather permitting. We invite guests to take the class more than once, as there’s always something new happening in the hive. Recommended for ages 8+.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, INCLUDING GUESTS. NO DROP-INS OR EXTRA PEOPLE, PLEASE.
No prior experience is needed.
Wear long thick, loose, lighter colored pants; closed-toed shoes, preferably BOOTS; and thick long socks. For safety reasons, persons without proper coverage (e.g. wearing shorts, leggings, sandals, ankle socks, etc.) will not be permitted to participate in the hive inspection.
Please bring drinking water.
Please provide loaner bee jacket size at the time of registration.
Minimum age is 8 years old.
Be aware: there is always a possibility of bee stings.

NOTE REGARDING SPACE: Beekeeping 101 is currently offered twice a month, at two separate apiaries. Space is limited and the classes fill very quickly. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if a space opens up, or you will get priority registration for the next Beekeeping 101. For children under 8yo, please contact us to be placed on the list for our next "Beekeeping 101 for Kids" class.

Registration for this event opens July 21. Wait list from the previous session will get priority registration.

Volunteer Hub: Eagle Scout Project (16 Aug 2026)

Our Eagle Scout improvement project at the sanctuary is almost done! Eagle Scout candidate Andy Nguyen and his crew have worked tirelessly over the past few weekends, installing an accessibility walkway that connects the parking area to the hexagon enclosure. Thank you to those who have stopped by to help. We think we might be done with JUST ONE MORE work party, and, as always, Andy could use a few heads / hands. If you are available for an hour or two... or four, please drop by any time during the work party window: 8:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., with a break somewhere in there for lunch.

Please wear closed shoes and sun protection. Bring drinking water and work gloves. We hope to see you there!

Please wear closed shoes and sun protection. Bring drinking water and work gloves. If available, please also bring gardening tools such as a rake, hoe, shovel or any other tools. Bee suit not required, but if you have one, please bring it.

Managing Italian Colonies (5 Sep 2026)

Come join us at Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary, to learn about Italian bees. Italian bees display different behaviors and require different care than our local "survivor" bees. Mites must be managed year-round to ensure the colony’s survival. This class is designed for established beginner or intermediate beekeepers who need to learn how to manage Italan honeybees. Protective gear is required (suit/jacket, closed shoes, gloves), and drinking water is recommended. This is an ongoing series that takes place about once a month, and space is limited to 6.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST BE REGISTERED - NO DROP-INS OR ADDITIONAL PEOPLE. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if anyone cancels, or you will get priority registration for the following event.

This event is free of charge. REGISTRATION FOR ALL ATTENDEES IS REQUIRED and available to club members only.

Monthly Meeting (6 Sep 2026)

Long Beach Beekeepers meet on the first Sunday of the month and welcome everyone from the experienced to the novice beekeeper to those just curious about beekeeping. The in-person meeting is open to the general public. Members who opt to attend online will be emailed the meeting link and passcode a day prior to the meeting.

In addition to a guest speaker, meetings include an opportunity drawing and a Honey of the Month tasting. September's honey is courtesy of Richard Moore. Sweet!

Share the Buzz—Volunteer at Jewish Long Beach- PRESCHOOL Program!

Do you enjoy working with students or have an interest in honey bees and the environment? We’re looking for volunteers to help bring engaging, hands-on bee education to about 100 children and families!

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and honey represents a sweet new year! At Alpert Jewish Community Center in Long Beach preschool, there will be a Shabbat Dinner and Rosh Hashanah celebration with the children. The children always explore the world of bees and honey around this time of year. It will be an amazing experience to have the experts talking about how special bees are!

This is a great opportunity to inspire curiosity, teach students about pollinators, and highlight the important role bees play in our ecosystem. No prior teaching experience is required—just a willingness to learn, connect, and share.
