This month we welcome Emilia Burnham, a Master's student at the Center for Integrative Bee Research (CIBER) at UC Riverside and a student of Nosema ceranae, a microscopic fungal parasite that infects honey bee colonies. In her research project, Emilia is investigating using heat-killed spores to treat the infection. She also measures the quantities of three molecular compounds from their hemolymph (insect blook) involved with their immunity: vitellogenin, chitinase and juvenile hormone.

Think your commute is bad? Our Honey of the Month traveled 8,000 miles to get here! Paul Nelson will be sharing his leatherwood honey from Tasmania with us. Rated one of the best tasting honeys in the world, leatherwood honey has floral notes, a spicy finish and is high in antioxidants.

In addition to a guest speaker and a honey tasting, our meetings feature an opportunity drawing. What a sweet deal!

Long Beach Beekeepers meet on the first Sunday of the month and welcome everyone from the experienced to the novice beekeeper to those just curious about beekeeping. The in-person meeting is open to the general public. Members who opt to attend online will be emailed the meeting link and passcode.

Special thanks to EDCO Recycling & Transfer for hosting our meetings.
