Long Beach Beekeepers
Beekeeping 101 is an introductory class that will give beginners a glimpse into the secret lives of honeybees. The class includes instruction, discussions, and suiting up to inspect the hives in the bee yard, weather permitting. We invite guests to take the class more than once, as there’s always something new happening in the hive.
NOTE REGARDING SPACE: Beekeeping 101 is currently offered twice a month, at two separate apiaries. Space is limited and the classes fill very quickly. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if a space opens up, or you will get priority registration for the next Beekeeping 101.
Registration for Moore Garden opens February 11. Wait list from the previous session will get priority registration.
Our March meeting is A Total Frame Job!
Wood frames, plastic frames, frames with foundation, foundationless frames, drone frames, unassembled frames, waxed foundation – you have options! But what to choose? And why one over the other? This month a panel of beekeeping experts – Jaime Guoz, Bill Lewis and Ray Teurman – explain different types of frames as well as when and why to use them.
Our Honey of the Month comes from Julian courtesy of Angela Quaglia. Come taste what the Cuyamaca Mountain bees have to offer!
Long Beach Beekeepers meet on the first Sunday of the month and welcome everyone from the experienced to the novice beekeeper to those just curious about beekeeping. The in-person meeting is open to the general public. Members who opt to attend online will be emailed the meeting link and passcode.
Special thanks to EDCO Recycling & Transfer for hosting our meetings.
Ready to join other club members in spreading the BEE LOVE? Please join us at the First Fridays table on the first Friday of the month. We always need new volunteers to help out. Even if you're new to beekeeping and think you don't know enough, you can help! By hanging around us, you already know more than the general public. And you know what they say... teaching something helps you to learn it better yourself. So come spread the word! Whether you are able to attend for all or part of the event, your help is always appreciated.
EXTRA, EXTRA! Final session, for members who have not yet had the opportunity to attend this popular workshop!
If you want to learn how to prep wooden frames in preparation for the big nectar flows of 2025, please join us on Saturday, March 8. Our frame-builders will be sharing their skills with club members. Why buy new when you can reuse? Working with previously used frames from the sanctuary, we will clean, rewire, and add foundation for sanctuary use (and a few extra for you). For this process, we will be using specialized equipment, which will limit the number of participants per session. There will be two sessions, back to back, in order to accommodate as many students as possible. Open to members who have not yet participated in this workshop during the 2025 season. Please enroll in only ONE session, not both. Registration will be cancelled for participants who enroll in both, or if they already attended in January.
Sessions: Morning 9AM - 12PM; Afternoon 12PM - 3PM.
This event is free of charge and is available to current LBB members. ALL ATTENDEES MUST BE REGISTERED - NO DROP-INS OR ADDITIONAL PARTICIPANTS. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if anyone cancels.
NOTE: Dates vary slightly between Groups A and B.
Have you fallen in love with the honey bees in your garden or during a visit to Beekeeping 101? Are you ready to take the next step to become a full-fledged beekeeper? Do you want to make 2025 your most memorable year ever? We have exactly the thing for you!
This course provides the instruction and hands-on experience to turn a beginner into a confident backyard beekeeper. Topics include hive management, bee biology, recognizing and treating common diseases and predators, legal requirements of keeping bees in Long Beach, and more.
After completing the course successfully and at the club's discretion, participants are eligible to receive a starter bee colony at no additional cost -- subject to availability. Frames and other hive equipment are not included. Please let us know if you want to adopt a colony and have your equipment.
This spring, our class will have several date options. Please read the dates carefully and register for the option that best suits your schedule. All options will include one in-person classroom lecture, one OPTIONAL field trip to a beekeeping supply shop, one in-person introduction to the apiary, two Zoom lectures, and one mentorship session in the bee yard.
PRO-TIP: Become a member before registering! Pay the same price, and get all the benefits of membership.
The Board of Directors meets online on the second Tbursday of the month to plan classes and other club offerings; discuss community outreach efforts; review finances; and address other administrative issues for the good of the order.
All current members are welcome to attend. We will send an email with the meeting link in advance of the meeting. If you have a topic to suggest for the agenda, please email club president Jacob Dickinson (president@longbeachbeekeepers.org) a minimum of three days in advance of the meeting.
We like to think Long Beach Beekeepers is in good hands under the leadership of our Board of Directors, but come to a meeting and you tell us!
