Long Beach Beekeepers
Beekeeping 101 is an introductory class that will give beginners a glimpse into the secret lives of honeybees. The class includes instruction, discussions, and suiting up to inspect the hives in the bee yard, weather permitting. We invite guests to take the class more than once, as there’s always something new happening in the hive. Recommended for ages 8+.
NOTE REGARDING SPACE: Beekeeping 101 is currently offered twice a month, at two separate apiaries. Space is limited and the classes fill very quickly. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if a space opens up, or you will get priority registration for the next Beekeeping 101. For children under 8yo, please contact us to be placed on the list for our next "Beekeeping 101 for Kids" class.
Registration for Moore Garden opens July 8. Wait list from the previous session will get priority registration.
This event is free of charge. REGISTRATION FOR ALL ATTENDEES IS REQUIRED and available to club members only.
Our August meeting is something a little extra. Member Paul Nelson is bringing his Flow Hive super to the meeting for a demonstration.
If you have extracted honey, you know it can be a sticky situation. Our popular honey extracting classes teach various methods for getting honey out of frames and into jars. Last year one of our workshops had an unexpected consequence - the mess convinced Paul to purchase a Flow Hive! He will share his experiences and what he has learned to make it a successful venture. Later in the meeting Paul and his Flow Hive honey will be our Honey of the Month!
We will also hear from Boy Scout Matthew Hong. For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew has taken on our apiary at the Captain Charles Moore Urban Community Garden under his wing. Hear about his planned improvements and fundraising efforts.
Long Beach Beekeepers meet on the first Sunday of the month and welcome everyone from the experienced to the novice beekeeper to those just curious about beekeeping. The in-person meeting is open to the general public. Members who opt to attend online will be emailed the meeting link and passcode.
Special thanks to EDCO Recycling & Transfer for hosting our meetings.
At our recent Honey Extracting class, we were able to extract approximately 180 pounds of honey, but there were three boxes of Crush and Strain frames left undone. They were returned to the sanctuary, to be protected by the bees from wax moth or SHB.
Jennifer Duke will be processing these three boxes at her home Tuesday, August 5, 7-9pm. We need just a few helpers to assist with this task. Could this be you?
Bring you apron! Address will be provided upon registration.
Look beyond jars of honey for added value from your apiary. This hands-on class provides instruction on using beeswax and other natural ingredients to make your own moisturizing lip balm. Each participant will help make and take home ten tubes of lip balm.
This class will be held in a private home in the Wrigley neighborhood of Long Beach. The address will be emailed with your registration confirmation.
Registration for Zaferia Junction opens July 23. Wait list from the previous session will get priority registration.
The Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary will be open for Bee Team members to come and help inspect bee hives. Registration for this event is by invitation only. Please join the waitlist if the class is full. We will notify you if anyone cancels. Space is limited to 4 Bee Team participants per session.
Please bring your protective gear, hive tools, smokers, and drinking water.
Registration opens August 3
Come join us at Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary, to learn about Italian bees with Bill Lewis. Italian bees display different behaviors and require different care than our local "survivor" bees. Mites must be managed year-round to ensure the colony’s survival. This class is recommended for second-year+ beekeepers. Protective gear is required (suit/jacket, closed shoes, gloves), and drinking water is recommended. This is an ongoing series that takes place approximately every three weeks, and space is limited to 6.
ALL ATTENDEES MUST BE REGISTERED - NO DROP-INS OR ADDITIONAL PEOPLE. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if anyone cancels, or you will get priority registration for the following event.
Ready to join other club members spread the news about honey bees? Please join us at First Fridays in Bixby Knolls. Even if you're new to beekeeping, you can help! By hanging around us, you already know more than the general public. And you know what they say... teaching something helps you to learn it better yourself. So come spread the word! Whether you are able to attend for all or part of the event, your help is always appreciated.
Registration for Moore Garden opens August 3. Wait list from the previous session will get priority registration.
